If you are planning on having a religious wedding ceremony you will most likely have to go through some sort of marriage prep. And even if you aren't, I would highly suggest going to a retreat or a couples weekend. The best advice I can give you is to have an open mind and put in the effort because you will get something even better in return!
If we are being completely honest, I was NOT looking forward to marriage prep. Hello, that's one more thing on my long list of to-do's! David and I had reached out to Father Cuevas, from St. Aloysius in Baton Rouge, to discuss marriage preparations. After our first meeting, I was quite surprised.. he was great and it went super well! We talked mainly about what we wanted as individuals to make sure it coincided with the other's hopes for our marriage. Next, we were told we had to do a marriage retreat in order to complete our preparation. Yep, you heard me a retreat, a whole weekend dedicated to this and we were not thrilled. After an already exhausting day at work, we headed to the retreat center. We checked in and were instantly thrown into the first night of lessons. We didn't get back to our rooms until midnight and the night was still young! I stayed up until almost 3 a.m. talking with the three other girls who would be my roommates for the weekend. Shout out to Kristina, Kelsey, and Brianna for making the weekend an experience I will never forget! The days were long but you honestly get out what you put in. We were lead by two other couples and a priest to guide us through topics such as financing, respectful communication, and other tough subjects newlyweds will face. The weekend allowed us to dedicate time towards us without worrying about outside distractions. In the end, David and I were thankful for this "mini marriage boot camp" and were surprised at how much more we learned about each other. P.S. "A Wedding is for a day, a Marriage is for a lifetime"
